Our exhibition this March is a limited display celebrating Firth Tower Women: past and present. This year's theme is women's handiwork (embroidery) in the Homestead Kitchen, running for the month alongside Women's History Month.

There will be lacework, crochet, ribbon embroidery, satin stitching, and art deco embroidered trims on display, and everything can be touched and admired. You can see examples of this handiwork on petticoats, table-runners, handtowels, tea trolley cloths, tea cosies, baby dresses, a camisole, and a 1860s Victorian matron of honour replica dress that was made in the 1990s.

Historically, embroidery was more than just a hobby - it was a form of self-expression, storytelling and, in many cases, a practical necessity. Women across generations used needlework to document their lives, create heirlooms, and contribute to their households. However, much of their artistry and labour went unrecognised. This exhibition aims to shine a light on these often-overlooked contributions, bringing their stories to life.

Our recognition of women’s history extends beyond textiles, the homestead itself holds a wealth of untold stories about the daily lives of women in earlier generations—stories of strength, perseverance, and ingenuity that shaped families and communities.

Come and celebrate the detailed and intricate work of the talented women of that era! 🧵

Standard admission fees apply: adults $10.00, children (5-16) $5.00, and seniors $5.00.
