Josiah Firth built the tower on this site in 1882. The tower is 16 metres high and is one of the earliest reinforced concrete buildings in New Zealand. The tower was refurbished as the centrepiece of the museum in 1978. The lookout was rebuilt in 1990 by Stanley Construction.

The Tower building is temporarily closed to the public due to earthquake assessments, other buildings are open as normal.

Firth Tower Museum will be closed from Saturday 23rd to Thursday 28th December 2023 for the Christmas holidays.  Open Friday 29th December 9am-3pm, Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st December 10am-4pm.  Closed Monday 1st January 2024 till 3rd January 2024.  Normal hours resume Thursday 4th January 2024.
