Josiah Firth built the tower on this site in 1882. The tower is 16 metres high and is one of the earliest reinforced concrete buildings in New Zealand. The tower was refurbished as the centrepiece of the museum in 1978. The lookout was rebuilt in 1990 by Stanley Construction.

The Tower building is temporarily closed to the public due to earthquake assessments, other buildings are open as normal.

The Firth Tower Museum will be closed on Friday 29 March and Monday 1 April 2024 for Easter and 25 April for ANZAC Day .
